Designed for success

overview

CCVI is home to a variety of programs, all of which are specialized toward children with visual impairments. Led by Teachers of the Visually Impaired, therapists, and specialists, all programs are customized on a case-by-case basis based on the needs of each individual child. Many receive one-on-one educational learning sessions and their parents utilize CCVI resources. As a consultant and a provider, the wealth of information in the field of early childhood education that CCVI possesses is always accessible to parents as their child receives evaluations, services, and programming. These comprehensive programs are also accessible to children with multiple disabilities, as long as they have a visual impairment.

The cost to attend CCVI or receive a functional vision evaluation varies based on the case. Services are paid for by either the school district, state, or parents. Local school districts may contract for CCVI preschool and kindergarten services according to their district guidelines.

THE BIG PICTURE

CCVI has no shortage of connections throughout the Kansas City area. Parents, teachers, therapists, community member, physicians, optometrists, pathologists, specialists, ophthalmologists, and many more all contribute to the CCVI mission. Therefore, it can be difficult to understand how a child receives services and what they will learn along the way.

It helps to take a look at the big picture.

Mobile outreach for vision education (MOVE) program

School districts looking for therapeutic or specialized services to be provided onsite at their facility can join the MOVE Program. This allows children to receive one-on-one services without enrolling in the Early Intervention or Early Learning Academy, based on the recommendation and guide of an individualized educational plan. No matter which stage of the education process a child is at, certified professionals with direct experience serving individuals with visual impairment are available to attach body oriented goals to a learning plan. The itinerant program provides specialized services to school districts on a contract basis for individuals with visual impairments (age 3-21). This comprehensive partnership brings CCVI therapists, specialists, and educators with focuses on visual impairments into the building of the student’s home district.

Sighted Peers Program

Children without visual impairments are incorporated into classrooms depending on the ratio and availability. This allows the space to transform from a class into a community where every student contributes their unique skills and talents. All children learn from one another and can identify similarities and differences. CCVI’s Sighted Peer Program is just one other way to ensure visual impairments or any other differing abilities do not become a barrier to friendship and progress.

Parent Group

At Children’s Center for the Visually Impaired, supporting the whole family is part of the mission. Families are welcomed into a community of support where each individual journey is recognized as unique; however, every member knows they are not alone. A CCVI parent has the opportunity to master the necessary tools to help their child grow and thrive with helpful hands available along the way.
